Dr. Powell works in partnership with each patient, utilizing laboratory and physical exam screenings (including pap smears, genetic testing, and functional lab analysis) to prevent disease and maximize patients’ enjoyment and quality of life. Her goal with each patient is to ensure that they understand how they have arrived at their present state of health as well as the available conventional and alternative treatment options to address disease. With individualized, creative problem solving, she empowers patients to take control of their own health by understanding how altering daily habits can create significant improvements in physical and emotional health.
Dr. Karly Powell’s path to a career in wellness in her own words:
I was enthralled with medicine and the amazing capacity of the human body from a young age, so a career in medicine always felt like a natural fit. But, while I was fascinated by advancements in medical care and modern diagnostics, I felt that nutrition and traditional natural remedies still had an important role to play in medical care. I didn’t know at the time what a significant role these therapies would play in my personal life as well.
At age 19, I began experiencing repeated episodes of unexplained kidney failure. Over time, this progressed to severe chronic pain and I was forced to give up many of the daily activities I enjoyed. Seven years and countless specialists later, I was nowhere closer to an answer. I eventually found my way to a naturopathic doctor, who diagnosed my condition and got me on a path toward healing. Today I have two healthy kidneys, am pain-free, and am able to do the activities I was told were no longer possible for me. Like so many of my patients, I have experienced the sense of hopelessness and abandonment that too often comes with disease. As a naturopathic doctor, I get to help my patients take advantage of both modern diagnostics and traditional healing modalities to find solutions to those seemingly unsolvable problems.
At the International Health & Wellness Center, I am part of a team offering a unique model of integrative medicine rarely found elsewhere in the US – one where practitioners of diverse backgrounds and training come together to not just work in proximity but truly collaborate on the care of each patient. This model of integrative care blends perfectly with that of naturopathic medicine, where the gentlest healing therapy is used first, and higher level intervention is reserved until truly necessary. The providers at the IHWC strive to identify and correct the root cause of illness and use all modalities available to restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit.
Dr. Powell’s Education:
Dr. Powell earned her medical degree from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, OR. She completed NCNM’s competitive teaching residency in naturopathic primary care, where she integrated pharmaceutical and surgical treatments with naturopathic medicine to provide the most advanced care modern medicine has to offer. She has advanced training in herbal medicine, integrative cardiovascular therapies, and intravenous (IV) micronutrient therapy.

Charlene Wang’s path to a career in wellness in her own words:
My path to become a dietitian was a humbling journey. I experienced through my own body what a difference lifestyle and nutrition can make. I previously wore many hats for a start-up tech company doing marketing, human resources, accounting and business development, working long hours for years. As a result of being overworked and stressed out, I was consistently getting sick, felt no spiritual meaning and altogether in poor health. It was at the age of 27 when I came to a turning point in my life. That year, I was misdiagnosed with cancer after I underwent surgery to remove a tumor. The entire process had me questioning everything I was doing wrong. To find an answer to my troubles, I immersed myself into studying holistic nutrition, Chinese herbalism, meditation and spirituality. Today, I am healthy and feeling great! I decided to shift from my personal treatment towards the health of people focusing on optimal nutrition for wellness and prevention of disease.
I was thoroughly fascinated with nutrition and its incredible impact on the human body. I enrolled in a nutrition classes at a local community college and found a part-time job in a local hospital’s clinical nutrition department shadowing Registered Dietitians (RD). I knew instantly that this was my calling and enrolled in graduate school. After working several years in a clinical setting, I decided to work in preventative settings where people could embrace nutrition in a healing and learning environment. I knew I would have a higher impact working one-on-one with clients or as a teacher. I pursued nutrition education as a professor of nutrition and joined the International Health and Wellness Center. It has been so spiritually rewarding to be able to help people transition towards a healthier diet and lifestyle while pursuing a passionate and personal mission. My personal mission is to help people feel empowered, experience optimal wellness and prioritize self-care as a daily practice.
Personal Mission Statement
“My personal mission is to help people feel empowered, experience optimal wellness and prioritize self-care as a daily practice. I hope to constantly evolve a nd heal through my work with people in nutrition.
